I'd like to try growing both plants so I can have seeds for bread and also for my chickens but . . .

Has anyone tried to grow sesame at home? If you have where did you find seeds? Are grocery store sesame seeds cooked/roasted or should I try sprouting some?

Also, can you harvest poppy seeds from any type of poppy or are some edible and others not?

I don't know about poppy seeds, but you can buy seeds from rareseeds.com (Baker Creek) where it says that it is a great southern crop. They have a couple of different packages that you can buy, white, black, seven seed blend. I bought a package to experiment with as I do live in the south and have read that it is being grown in Missouri.

Horizon Herbs http://www.horizonherbs.com has the black sesame seeds. They say that plant prefers full sun, fertile soil, and is pretty drought tolerant. Directly sow in spring into your garden. Runs about 2.95 for 100 seeds.
