My first beanie!

Actually, its for my daughter (that's her in the pics).. But I made it! It's crocheted in double stitch.. It's a little wonky looking because I guess I didn't realize how big her head was so had to widen it more.. I also am really not sure how I got that knob on the top.. Maybe too many single stitches at the beginning? Or I didn't start increasing soon enough? I also ran out of yarn (didn't realize just how much yarn it would take) so I had to add the maroon border around the bottom.. It's also darker then it looks in the pic.. The camera flash kind of bled out the colors.. I wasn't even done with this one and my two boys are asking for their own beanie.. Anyway, let me know what you think of my first completed piece..

knitting/crocheting in the round is very difficult. It's hard to know exactly how and when to make an increase. If this is your first effort, I must say, it looks much better than any of my early efforts. Keep up the good work.

If you need help crocheting, by all means ask me. I've become the little crochet manic of my group. Somehow I managed to make 6 lapghans for the vet hospital last month. I've slowed down this month because I'm starting seeds and making raised beds and cold frames. (Like we have cold down here!......ha!)

Anyway ask and I'll answer. If you want to keep the holiness to a minimum in the hats, use a size H hook with worsted weight and do it in half double crochet. You'll need more rows cause the stitch is a little shorter but you can just alternate increasing and not increasing at the beginning and then just keep adding rows until it's long enough.

I'm not really sure what worsted is or which of my yarns would be worsted.. Most of them are just a ball or skein of yarn with no wrapper on it.. I do have a skein of black that says worsted on it and it also says medium.. I don't know how to do a half double crochet yet.. I watched a series of videos on youtube to learn how to do the beanie, the single, double and triple crochet, increasing and decreasing, and the finishing part around the edge.. I'll have to look up half double crochet..

Thanks Kim.. She's quite the ham, as you can see.. All three of my children love the camera which is odd since I don't.. I prefer to be behind the camera taking the pictures..

I did 4 pair of mittens so far and would love to add some slippers as well. Are socks hard?

Not really if you divide them into three parts. I like to start at the toe so you can try them on while you are making them and adjust accordingly. I have long narrow feet so I ALWAYS have to adjust the pattern......no one makes a sock pattern for size 11AAA.

The first part is the toe. It's like the bottom of a purse where you crochet on both sides of the chain in an oblong. Then you just go around in a circular method like a hat for a while. Then you have to make the heal........I use short rows for that and the concept isn't hard but can throw people. Then it's back to circles again.

There are a couple of sites that do alot of the math for how many stitches you need depending on your shoe size and that works for most people......I'm just weird so I do the "try them on again" thing.

I'll look for the sites and post them and you can play around. Don't use your favorite sock yarn the first time! And keep notes if you make changes so you can do it on the other sock. The worst part is the "one sock" syndrome.
