Hydroponic-Aquaponic Indoor Garden System
What is an Aquaponic System and why would I want it in my house? Well the answer is three simple letters: USL!
Hydroponics and Aquaponics are sustainable food production systems that combine a traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. Installing an aquaponic system is helpful for growing plants and fish in the winter climate which can sometimes be off-limits for growing anything. It took me a full days to do this, but it's worth it.
What you'll need:
- A metal shelving unit
- 55 gallon fish tank
- Water pump
- Clear tubing
- Quick connect push connectors
- Valve which allows you to control, stop, and adjust water flow
- a timer
- Strapping to support the planters
- Holes in the bottom of the strapping to allow the water to drain
- 2" of gravel
- perlite for the plants
- Flo-tubes and light fixture
- seeds
Reminders:
- Do not put any fish into the tank for a week.
- Set up your pump so that the water is on for 1 hour and off for 3 hours
- And for the light, imitate daylight - having the lights on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours
- Watch this video several times and you will know what you are doing. If I can do it, you can do it too!
Have fun!
