January 1, 2008
Dear Patricia,

Happy New Year and welcome to all of our new subscribers. These past two weeks have been very busy and fun. I have been working on my Farmers' Almanac gardening article for the 2009 edition, how cool is that? Look for it in August 08.

I used to hate winter, not only for the obvious reasons, but because I can't really do anything with my garden. This year is different. I have been working on my winter garden, and amazing as it is I have been growing parsley and oregeno and some other tasty greens quite successfully. I took advantage of the warm weather and also set up a quick and easy composter, that works great.

I also began what is turning out to be a huge improvement in indoor food production, my indoor, low cost aquaponic growing system. It is still in it's development stages but I have a good feeling about it, so check out the article below.

The Garden Girl TV broadband network has increased by leaps and bounds. I also have a couple of new videos that I am very proud of which feature some of my friends and neighbors. The network is now averaging 1500+ views a day in less than a month, thanks to you. Keep watching and sharing.

The Winter Garden and Aquaponic System

Here I am in my winter garden. I have a hoop house behind me, and two of my recycled skylight cold frames in operation. I learned about Four Season gardening through Eliot Coleman's fantastic book. This year I have mostly herbs planted. The thing is, we (in the Northeast) have enough sunlight, we are at the same latitude as southern France, it's the cold that gets us. By using simple plastic or glass coverings the temperature can be increased enough to grow all winter, if the crop is cold hardy of course!

Here is my oregeno and parsley still going strong deep into January! I have all cold hardy crops growing, like kale, raddicio, mache and some cold hardy carrots as well. The first time I grew plants outdoors in the winter I was shocked at how well some plants do. Eliot Coleman does it quited sucessfully and he is in Maine a few hundred miles further north from me! Check out my library and links page to see his book and some other very good ones as well.

On a website I frequent, www.homesteadingtoday.com, there were a couple of questions on easy composting systems. One of the best and cheapest ways to make a compost bin is to simply get a roll of wire, put it in a circle and pile it full of organic matter. This system works great, it gets a lot of air throughout the pile. In the spring I will simply pull the wire off and rake out the compost. I also put these inside my raised beds, it makes a great top dressing. The video for this should be done sometime next week.

Here is my Aquaponic growing system. Aquaponics is a simple way of growing food using natures cycles. The system is designed so that the waste from the fish is pumped up and into the metal containers where plants purify the water. This system is in "Beta Test" right now, but so far with positive results. Later I will power it all with solar cells. More on this as it develops. If YOU have any ideas please email me.

Let's make it great in '08!
My first newsletter of 2008! I would like to welcome all the new subscribers as well as my old friends. I was back in Georgia this week shooting with Farmers Almanac. A great time on a great American show. I can't wait for these shows to start airing in April. Remember go to their site, www.farmersalmanac.com, and see when it is available in your neck of the woods.

The rough draft of my library and links page is up. Remember it is a rough draft, Brianna has been working her butt off on it and I want to show it off, even though it isn't quite ready.

The indoor garden five part series is now available for viewing. Don't forget to check out the article on those videos below.

Next weekend I am going to shoot an aquaculture project. I am very excited about it. It is going to be a lot of fun. I was also shown a great Eco business. Clovers Garden Centers in Chicago. They are super cool. They are a chain of 17 seasonal garden centers that set up shop in parking lots bringing garden supplies to neighborhoods that couldn't support a year round operation. My hat is off to Clovers Garden Center. Check them out at www.cloversgardencenter.com. I wish there was one around me here in Boston!

Thanks again, and have a Great 2008!

Patti

Farmers Almanac TV: Season 3 Shoot in Savannah Georgia

We did a great story on creating local food options in Urban environments and helping people who need it most. In Chicago, according to Mayor Daley, there are some 70,000 vacant lots. Citizens have started redeveloping that land into Gardens and Urban farms. Foodies and Localvores unite! Many cities have vacant lots, I try to keep the lots around me clean, and I use them as forest areas for my own permaculture gardens and my livestock. Preserving open space in Urban areas and having it give back is something I am a huge supporter of. Join in the movement in your area.

Patti, Rob and Beecher on the Red Carpet Here I am working on the script with the director of FATV Paul. This was the last day of shooting, where now all the scripts are in my head and I am confusing myself, hence the head scratching :)! Paul helped me work thru it and we made the day.

Look at me now Mom! I am on the farm! My gaffer Mike works the sun to give me a nice hair light. I keep telling Mike and Mickey to bring out the super model reflector and they just bring out the regular one.

Shooting in Georgia reminds how I wish I could garden in a southern zone! Look at those flowers! It is January! I can only imagine what it is like to garden in a warm climate.

We also did a story on Sculptor, Susie Chisholm, www.susiechisholm.com. She's created great bronze sculptures and I got a chance to see her studio which is major in my opinion.
