December 2007
Real Life Interupted!

You may or may not have heard by now that Rob suffered a stroke Dec. 9th. So, everyone is saying "What?!'. In the interest of ending any rumors, here is the true story. We had just finished shooting Garden Girl's 1st Eco friendly Christmas Special (see below) for the day, and were settling in to watch the undefeated Patriot's play somebody. I looked around for Rob, who had been looking over some documents, but hadn't come in to see the game. I found him collapsed in the bedroom on the floor. He thought he was fine and just needed to catch his breath. He was paralyzed on his left side and his speech was slurred. The crew came to my aid, and we had him in the ambulance to Brigham and Women's hospital within 15 minutes, which was one of the keys to his miraculous recovery.

After a CAT scan it was clear he had a large MCA Stroke & blockage. They gave him the medicine TPA(which is not prescribed in 40% of the emergency rooms around the country!) and within eight hours he was ready to go home. They kept him under observation until Wednesday and then sent home & back to work. The cause is clearly his Tobacco habit, which I'm happy to report he hasn't touched since he almost died. The part of his brain where the brain tissue died, was the part that makes him reasonable, so there's no real issue there. For me it was a emotional roller coaster that I'm still not completely over, but I'm thankful we'll all be together for the holidays. A big thank you to our friend Edgar, a doctor at BWH for his support.

Farmers Almanac TV Shoot

I am so proud and happy to be working with Farmer's Almanac TV, I can't think of a show that is more dedicated to helping inform and inspire people about sustainable living. This week we were shooting the introductions to the stories we are covering in season three. We did stories ranging from the venerable green publication Mother Earth News (www.motherearthnews.com) to one of my absolute heroes, Joel Salatin of polyface farms (www.polyfacefarms.com).

I first found out about Joel as I was learning about raising poultry, and then I read some of his books especially his wonderful book (Everything I want to do is illegal).

And Mother Earth News? What do you say? It is THE resource that can help get even the complete beginner into living a green life. If you have questions, between the back issues and forums, there, is a great place to find answers.

Here I am in a giant pile of oyster shells. If it wasn't for oyster shells we wouldn't have eggs!

Mickey, my cameraman, looks a little extra happy having me in the water doesn't he? If you haven't already, check out www.farmersalmanac.com!

Happy Eco-Friendly Christmas 2007!

Every year, for the past decade, when the holidays were over I would look at my bank account and be broker than broke, but an Eco-Friendly Christmas can also be a wallet friendly Christmas. Being ecologically responsible is almost the polar opposite of consumerism. Check out my 1st ever Xmas special below only available to you!

I'll have the full version available on my website in the near future. I hope you like them, leave comments and forward them along and feel free to put them on your blog or website as well. My website is being updated almost daily with new videos, updated links, and more pages coming soon, so visit often and forward the link to everyone you know.

Dear Patricia,

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks to Chris & Kai for having us over this year on Dudley Street.

I just got back from working with Farmer's Almanac TV in Savannah. It was so much fun! Check out more of the details on my trip below. This month's National Geographic highlighted my favorite apple, the Roxbury Russet! How cool is that?! My town's apples are global!

Also, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it's still not too late to get a tree in the ground . Learn my idea of how to make Tree planting easy and how to be more Eco friendly over the holidays. Last but not least, my landing page is now up and live (www.gardengirltv.com). Many thanks to Briana and Jim at Sonora Designworks. Their hardwork is finally paying off. Now it is time to refine it and get the rest of the pages up. There are some new videos up there too! There is a flash box towards the top of the page which rotates the new videos, just click on them and take a look. Send me an email with comments to info@gardengirltv.com. I'd love a some feedback.

Thanks again, and have a great Eco-friendly holiday season,

Patti

P. S. We got a great review on our film Public Enemy:Welcome to the Terrordome in Variety! Check out the link. http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117935472.html?categoryid=31&cs=1 As soon as I have the next screening date, I'll let you know. We'd love to see you there.

Plant Trees and have an Eco-Friendly Christmas!

Late fall and early winter are great times to plant trees. Not only do the trees prefer to be planted now, but you can take advantage of the sales at your local nursery. Make it easy on yourself and plant small trees. This way you don't have to work as hard because you are digging a small hole. Trees are one of the things that reduce carbon in the atmosphere, so lets plant as many trees as we can!

This year I'm going to work on making the holidays more green. I love having a real tree on christmas, but I wondered if there was a way to have one without cutting one down. Going through the city, I see piles of Christmas trees for sale. So my idea is to use a potted evergreen tree instead. During the rest of the year, I will keep it pretty well trimmed and fertilized and hopefully use it over and over again.
