My First Farm Stand

I use my gardens as a place for expeditionary learning. Children need to see, smell and touch, and a visit to my farm sticks with them and gives them an understanding of where their food comes from. Teaching kids to live healthier and provide for themselves, even on a small scale thru gardening and husbandry projects is an essential step toward preserving our culture and living sustainably in harmony with nature.

The Educational tour is designed to be fun, informative and delicious. Students feed the animals, identify plants and vegetables, study aquaculture, and reinforce essential elementary science, environmental science, and biology curriculums.

Schools & Organizations that have visited include: Nathan Hale School, Mission Grammar School, Paige Academy, Springfield College, Groundworks-Sommerville and The Food Project Please watch the video and see for yourself what an impact urban Sustainable living has on the children and adults of our community.

The program isn’t just for kids. Educational Group tours and workshops can be scheduled to take place during the work week and is currently available on a limited basis. A full curriculum and fundraising effort is in the planning stages so that this can be offered to all elementary school children in the City of Boston, free of charge. Home Schoolers are encouraged to email me if interested in volunteering on a weekly basis. To schedule an educational tour during the month of May 2008 or a day camp tour during July 2008, please contact me at info@gardengirltv.com.

I was inspired to start a farm stand after reading Andy Lee and Patricia Foreman’s book Backyard Market Garden. It seemed to make sense as a logical extension of my gardening and has turned into one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done. My farm stand has allowed me to meet and make friends with lots of my neighbors and is clearly an important step forward in sustainable living. The more of our food we can get locally the better, so why not grow a little extra veggies and sell them to your neighbors? They’ll love it if you do. I still give away almost as much as I sell, but it seems to work itself out in the end.

After I work my market garden and farm stand this year I hope to be able to give you a series of how to videos on market gardening and maybe even a book too.

Garden Girl’s Urban Farm is open to the public for tours, tastings, and workshops. The Farm Stand officially opens to the General Public May 2008 thru July 2008.
